Type Locality and Naming

SE Tarim Basin. The Zhasikansaihe Fm was named by Feng Mingdao in 1981. The naming section is around Hongliuquan Gully-Zhasikansai River on North Slope of Altun Mt., Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region). The Zhasikansaihe Fm is the lowermost formation-level stratigraphic unit of the Baxkorgan Gr.

Synonym: (扎斯勘赛河组)


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of the Zhasikansaihe Fm is composed of dark-grey, dark-grey-green intermediate-basic tuff, volcanic breccia and intermediate-basic lava sandwiched with minor limestone lenses and conglomerate. Middle part is an interbedding of grey, dark-grey greywacke, silty mudstone, siltstone and tuff, tuffaceous sandstone and tuffaceous conglomerate, accompanied with chert, siliceous siltstone and dolomite. Upper part is an interbedding of grey to grey-green fine-grained sandstone, siltstone, chert and siliceous sandstone, the base consists of a conglomerate and pebbly coarse sandstone, but the top is massive limestone. The thickness varies from 2425 m to 4362 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in fault contact with the underlying Altunshan Gr.

Upper contact

The top is in conformable contact with the overlying Hongliuquan Fm.

Regional extent

SE Tarim Basin. The formation is mainly distributed in Ruoqiang County on North Slope of Altun Mountain and along Zhasikansai River, Kalatashitag Ruoqiang and, Qiemo counties.

The microplants in the upper part are Trachysphaeridium sp. etc.
